When HP added POSIX to MPE, creating MPE/iX 5.0, it became possible to port many popular "Unix" utilites to MPE. Since it was possible, many people started to do so, and then made these utilities available via the Internet.
At IPROF a few years ago, when asked about providing C++ on MPE, HP suggested downloading the GNU G++ product via the Internet. I, Michael Hensley, then sarcastically asked if they had actually tried it, over a (typical, at the time) 9600 baud modem.
As penance, I decided to make these utilities available via tape. Although most people now have access to faster Internet connections, the size of the downloads has grown ever larger. I think the tape will continue to be useful for some time to come.
The first version of the tape was made available at IPROF '97, courtesy of Lund Performance Solutions (my then employer). It was very popular.
After IPROF '97, Interex stepped in and offerred to make the tape available to anyone who wants it (whether you are a member of Interex or not), at a very low cost (basically the cost of materials and shipping)!
Although you will be using the packages at your own risk, all of them are from well-known, clearly identified, trusted sources within the HP3000 community.
Click on the package name to go to the (not necessarily MPE-specific) web page for that package; click on "Download" to download the MPE version.
(If you think the 4 digit version number shows great faith in the longevity of the project, you are an optimist; if you think it anticipates a very high rate of new releases, you are a programmer!)
This page will be updated as new versions of the tape are created. I might even make the page look better, add Java applets, CGI scripts, animated GIF's, background music, etc. -- but probably not.
