WINMPE 2 BRINGS WIN-BASED MANAGEMENT TO HP 3000

Bradmark Technologies, Inc., based in Houston, Texas, has extended the functionality of WinMPE, the Windows-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the HP 3000 MPE/iX operating system. Now in its second generation, WinMPE has incorporated new middleware messaging technologies, added improved application integration capabilities, expanded operation to span multiple HP 3000 hosts on the network, and added a new scripting engine to support the development of Java or VisualBasic scripts. Essentially, this upgrade expands functionality across network hosts.

With WinMPE, users can now employ a simple drag-and-drop operation to move accounts, users, groups, and files across system boundaries. They can do all this without having to edit the generated command lines and still customize the generated script to complete the task. Users familiar with the Windows hierarchical structure can view and interoperate with the MPE/iX operating system in the same simple and effective way.

Timothy F. Hunt, Senior Technical Consultant for McKesson HBOC CACD, says, "With the need to manage large numbers of temporary files while working with multiple systems, the ease of use of the MPE Command Center Version 2.0 has made the job much easier with the Windows GUI interface." Hunt adds, "The ability of the software to retain user names and passwords allows the work to be done with the correct logons without the problem of keeping track of the details associated with this complex environment."

Among the significant new features are:

  • Multiple HP 3000 sessions supported from a single WinMPE console
  • Drag-and-drop functionality (copy or move) for file transfers, users, groups, accounts, HFS folders, IMAGE databases, KSAM files across host systems
  • Greater flexibility to integrate applications into the Command Console and WinMPE, with support for passing information about the host connection to the application
  • Scripting engine supporting VBScript and JavaScript allows for custom tasks to be provided in WinMPE
  • Color-coded editing and file review from within WinMPE, making the task of locating key information in large text files an easy task

The WinMPE client runs under the Windows 98/NT operating system and communicates with the HP 3000 host through a messaging middleware technology. Server agents on the host HP 3000 take all message requests and execute them on the HP 3000 and then return the results via an outbound message to the appropriate WinMPE client. This simple, yet effective, technology approach enables complex tasks to be reduced to simple user actions.
