Results from the Second HP e3000 Transition Survey

In February, 2002, Interex began polling HP e3000 Users for its second survey to gauge the evolving user needs, interests, and to continue to be their advocate to HP. This e3000 Survey was designed to better understand the challenges, tools and support needed to deal with the phased termination of the e3000 product line.

Conducted online from February 25th to March 15th, this second survey received 582 respondents. Below are the results:

  1. Please indicate the computer platforms with which you are involved (multiples allowed):

    HP e3000 100%
    HP 9000 35%
    NetServer 29%
    Sun 13%
    IBM 12%

  2. Please indicate your primary job function (Choose one from the list):

    Executive 25%
    IT Manager 32%
    Technical Staff 40%
    Other 3%

57% of responses are from IT managers and executives!

  3. Please indicate your level of responsibility (Hardware/Software) in making decisions regarding future directions of your HPe3000 (Choose one from the list):

    Final Decision 19%
    Strongly Influence 45%
    Recommend 26%
    Not Involved 10%

90% of responses are from individuals who influence e3000 decisions within their companies. 64% have a very significant influence on e3000 decisions!

  4. Is the HPe3000 system your primary computing environment?

    Yes 70%
    No 30%

HP e3000 is the primary environment for 70% of participants. Of those (70%), 20% indicated the e3000 is their only primary environment.

  5. Who is the primary support provider (Hardware/Software) for your organizations HP e3000 systems? (Choose one from the list)

    HP 66%
    3rd Party 20%
    No Support 14%

66% of respondents are HP Support Customers.

  6. Please indicate which HP e3000 System(s) your organization is currently using (multiples allowed):

    9x7 40%
    99X 11%
    9X8 26%
    9X9 42%
    A Class 9%
    N Class 12%

Survey changes from the first survey show slight drops in older systems. This drop is most likely due to system consolidations taking place before migration. Regardless, only a small % of customers can do HP 9000 system conversions.

  7. Please indicate which version(s) of the MPE/iX operating system your organization is running (multiples allowed):

    Version 6 40%
    Version 6.5 43%
    Version 7 21%

The slight drop (differences from the first survey) in 6.0 use and the increase in 7.0 use, again shows consolidations. Users of version 6.0 will lose support from HP in November 2002; Users of 6.5 will lose support from HP in December 2003.

  8. Using your best estimate, how long will it take your organization to complete the migration? (Choose one from the list)

    Less than 1 year 13%
    1 to 2 years 35%
    2 to 5 years 40%
    Greater than 5 years 12%

52% estimate that the migration will take longer than 2 years, yet the majority of customers will lose support on their primary systems in less than 2 years. HP needs to get customers to 7.0 quickly!

  9. To what degree has your organization already planned for, or implemented a transition strategy for your HP e3000 application? (Choose one from the list)

    Planning stages only 52%
    Not at all 26%
    Partial migration 15%
    Full migration 7%

As expected, a majority of customers have now moved into the planning stages of migration (since November 01).

Summary Conclusions:
  • The e3000 is used as a primary computing system for many organizations, although, it is not the only primary system.
  • Many customers havent upgraded to MPE/ix 7.0 which causes additional work. (some customers cant go to 7.0). There isnt a sufficient support life to support customers migrating from 6.5.
  • A majority of customers arent satisfied or aware of HPs migration products and services.
  • Primary migration issues are: high cost, tool availability and application replacement difficulty.
  • HP is losing customers to non-HP platforms primarily Non-HP Windows but also IBM, Sun and Non-HP Linux.
  • Customers arent satisfied with HPs investigation of OpenMPE.

These results (from the second survey) were presented to Winston Prather and several managers at CSY.

Interex will continue to survey its member base and provide such results to HP to help customers keep their e3000 systems resilient and productive while implementing their transition strategy (be it migration or homestead).

Interex wishes to thank those who took the time to complete the survey and express your views.
