OpenMPE Possibilities and
Discussion
It is the intent of this group to carefully and calmly evaluate the viability
of the MPE/iX Operating System moving to an alternative entity that would
allow for it's support and enhancements to continue beyond the scheduled
December 31, 2006 end of support date from Hewlett-Packard. Members of this
group include Hewlett-Packard, MPE 3rd party utility vendors, MPE application
vendors, and many long standing members of the MPE community.
Staying with your HPe3000 (Wirt Atmar)
Plan B: Staying on the HP3000 indefinitely
Wirt Atmar, a long time HPe3000 professional presents a "homestead" approach to your HPe3000,
"A number of people, including HP itself, have been recently describing staying on the HP3000 indefinitely as being very risky. I completely disagree with that assessment. In fact, I believe that it may well be the least risky thing you can do, thus I've spent the day writing a general reply to that assertion. Because I wanted to include pictures in my response, illustrating what we do in our own circumstances, I've put the reply up as a web page. It's at: http://aics-research.com/planb.html"
Plan now, Migrate later (Gavin Scott)
Another HPe3000 professional, Gavin Scott, writes, "My personal advice would be, 'plan now, execute later' (click to view story) and in the interval
be aware of things you are doing that you might be able to do slightly
differently so as to minimize your dependence on the 3000 if you actually
get to the 'execute' phase."

Cobol Programming:
Acucorp: With the release of Acucorps
(www.acucorp.com) Version 5.2 of Extend
5, HP e3000 developers will be able to maintain their existing applications
with a full range of COBOL development tools, while at the same time
benefiting from the many modern programming technologies supported by extend
5, including Client/Server, e-business, and Thin Client deployment
capabilities. As a result, HP e3000 customers will no longer be faced with the
challenges of migrating or converting their valuable COBOL assets to other
packages or languages when addressing current business needs. For more
information go to: http://www.acucorp.com/News/Press/releases/hpe3000_pr.html
Legacy J: LegacyJ'ss PERCobol product is
an advanced function COBOL compiler permitting the creation of Graphical,
Object Oriented, Platform independent, Java enabled COBOL applications. Using
PERCobol, COBOL applications may fully exploit new capabilities or only use
those required for a specific programming environment. For more information go

Database:
HP-Eloquence: HP Eloquence (www.hp-eloquence.com) is a TurboIMAGE
clone that runs on UNIX, Linux and Windows NT/2000. It is supported by
Marxmeier Software (www.marxmeier.com).
PostgreSQL: PostgreSQL (www.postgresql.org) is a sophisticated
Object-Relational DBMS, supporting almost all SQL constructs, including
subselects, transactions, and user-defined types and functions. It is an
open-source database but commercial support is available.
Denkart: Denkart's ViaNova product (www.denkart.com) is an end-to-end solution
for Migrating and Converting entire application environments.
Transoft Legacy Liberator
Transoft's Legacy Liberator rules based toolset is used to convert HP
3000 legacy source to Open Systems COBOL of your choice, and the
Intrinsics are converted to a combination of COBOL and C. The Image
database I/O can optionally be converted to embedded SQL or the
Transoft Data Access Module provides emulation of Image functionality
using RDBMS with little change to the Image I/O syntax. We provide a
range of options for the VPLUS forms: conversion to COBOL character
screens; Transoft's Frontier GUI Lite; moving to a full GUI with
Visual Basic or Java/JSP using Transoft's Graphical Adapters which
also continues to allow character screens. Finally the application can
be improved to include Web applications, mobile or wireless
applications, enterprise application integration or new functionality.
This is achieved using the Transoft Componentization tools to create a
Services Orientated Development Architecture (SODA) providing
J2EE,.NET, XML etc application interfaces.
