In the last two years, following requests from Holocaust survivors and their families, attorneys from the Legal Forum have been acting within the Knesset and the government to correct injustices in the treatment of Holocaust survivors. After much effort by the Forum and other sources, this week the government approved a budget increase of 1 billion NIS per year for Holocaust survivors, with the understanding that the 200,000 survivors living in Israel today have limited time left.

The Boycott Law to prevent damage to the state of Israel through boycott was passed in the Knesset in 2011 in order to allow business owners affected by calls to boycott their products to sue boycotters in a civil suit. The law also authorizes the Minister of Finance and Minister of Justice to impose sanctions against the boycotters.

Continued Discrimination against Residents of Judea and Samaria

This week we saw another example of discrimination between residents of the State of Israel and residents of Judea and Samaria: it occurred as part of the selection process for the new Chief Rabbis of Israel. One public was constitutionally and morally excluded from the selection process in an unacceptable manner - the residents of Judea and Samaria. Apparently not every Jewish Israeli citizen is entitled to partake in the selection process; at least not through his representatives in the electoral body.

Recently there have been serious disturbances and riots in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is surprising how well timed these riots are, as it seems that every time a riot takes place, the electricity is cut off in the streets where the riots are taking place, so that the cameras installed in these areas stop functioning. Even if some cameras do continue to film, their effectiveness decreases because the streets are dark and nothing is visible.

This week it was announced that Israel will be releasing 104 Palestinian prisoners to coincide with the resumption of peace talks.
The Legal Forum for Israel has petitioned the Pardons Department of the Ministry of Justice and requested that they invite all members of the families of terror victims to receive relevant information before the murderers of their dear ones are released.

Last Thursday police officers armed with a Taser gun stormed into the home of Boaz Albert, a resident of Yitzhar. Albert was arrested for violating an administrative restraining order issued by the IDF which mandated him from returning to Judea and Samaria for 18 months, even though his home is in Samaria.

The police officers who entered his home used disproportionate force against Albert and shocked him several times despite him not being violent in any way, nor endangering the four police officers who had come to arrest him.

The activities of political movements like the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) around the world to boycott the State of Israel and its citizen's has the potential to cause enormous damage, therefore in 2011 the Knesset voted to limit these types of activities. The "Boycott Law" was passed in order to protect the rights of the Israeli public whose rights have been violated or may be violated in the future due to the boycott.

This past Sunday the Legal Forum for Israel displayed once again the necessity of its activities to defend the interests State of Israel.

The Legal Forum for Israel mourns the passing of Supreme Court Judge (ret) Edmund Levy z"l.

Judge Levy was clear voice which would not bow down to the majority in the Supreme Court. Levy will always be remembered for his brave stance in the protection of the human rights of the residents of Gush Katif even as a heavy-handed government decided to uproot them. Judge Levy represented a minority opinion criticizing the government's decision, claiming it was unconstitutional.
