On Tuesday August 25 a ceremony took place in Jerusalem naming a street after Moshe Kraus, the man who led the largest rescue operation in the Holocaust.
Kraus, a resident of Budapest, was responsible for the rescue of tens of thousands of Jews at the "Glass House" in the capital of Hungary.
At the Glass House, under Kraus' leadership, documents of some 100,000 Hungarian Jews were forged, which made the rescue from the death transports to Auschwitz possible. Kraus died in Jerusalem in 1986 at the age of 78.
Kraus's enterprise has been forgotten and silenced for years due to the fact that the young state of Israel was led by the left-wing Mapai Party who tried to prevent Krauss, who testified in the famous trial against Israel Kastner, the recognition he deserved. The name of the great savior was almost completely absent from the discussion of rescuers during the Holocaust.
Although this is not part of the Legal Forum's regular activities, the historic injustice to Moshe Krauss, which was brought to the attention of Nachi Eyal, Director General of the Legal Forum, led him to contact the Jerusalem Municipality and request that Moshe Krauss be commemorated for his extraordinary actions during the Holocaust.
In addition the Forum has contacted Education Minister Naftali Bennett requesting that the life story of Moshe Kraus become a part of the study program in schools in Israel.
